The highlight reel and the backstage — What the comparison is actually costing you

3.8.202629.7.2026 | Paula Immo

You already know what the highlight reel is.

The post that looks effortless. The business that appears to be scaling smoothly. The founder on stage who seems so certain, so at ease, so completely in her element. The interview, the launch, the visible moment of someone else’s success that lands in your feed (at exactly the wrong time).

You know it isn’t the whole picture. You’ve been told, many times, in many ways, that what you’re seeing is curated. That behind every highlight reel there is a backstage. That the comparison isn’t fair.

And still it runs. Still something in you measures and doubt arrives. Often dressed as honest self-assessment.

I want to offer you something today that goes deeper than the reminder that the highlight reel isn’t real. Because I think you already know that. And knowing it hasn’t made the comparison stop.

The distortion underneath the comparison

Let’s name what’s actually happening when the comparison runs.

You are measuring your inside against someone else’s outside. Your uncertainty, doubt, and behind-the-scenes; the unfiltered, unedited, private experience of building something that matters, against their polished, public, carefully presented exterior. Their highlight reel against your backstage.

That really is a distortion. And it’s a completely unfair setting for comparison. You have full access to your own interior experience. Every thought, every fear, every moment of self-doubt running underneath your surface is available to you in real time. You have zero access to what’s running underneath theirs.

You are comparing complete information on one side to a curated surface on the other. And then making real decisions from it. Real decisions about whether you’re ready, whether you’re enough, whether what you’re building is worth putting into the world. And whether you have the permission to do so.

Based on information that was never accurate to begin with.

I knew this intellectually for a long time. I could explain it clearly, name it precisely, and still feel the comparison run every time I looked at someone whose visibility seemed more established and results seemed more certain. Whose exterior seemed more confident than my interior felt.

And then, in 2018, I understood it in a completely different way.

The morning I became the highlight reel

In 2018 I was interviewed on one of the biggest breakfast television shows in Finland.

From the outside, I imagine it looked like a prestige moment that signals arrival. Letting everyone know that you’ve built something worth noticing. And that you have something worth saying to a large audience. Most of all, that you are, by some measurable external standard, succeeding.

And in some ways it was. I’m not saying otherwise. It was a significant moment and I’m grateful it happened.

But here’s what it felt like from the inside.

I was in an active fight-flight state the entire time. Not nervous in the manageable, butterflies-before-a-big-moment way. Fully activated. My nervous system was responding to the situation as threat rather than opportunity. I felt unworthy. Not enough. I was so consumed by how I was coming across that I couldn’t stay fully present in the moment.

I couldn’t enjoy it. I was there, performing the version of myself that belonged on that set, while the actual version of me was somewhere else entirely — waiting for it to be over.

And it took a long time to recover afterward. From the activation. The interview itself went fine by, I guess, any external measure. But the internal experience of it, holding the gap between the outside and the inside, was exhausting.

What that morning gave me

That experience gave me something that no amount of intellectual understanding about comparison had managed to give me before.

I became the highlight reel.

I was the person on the screen that someone else might have looked at and thought: she has it together. She’s made it. Look at what she’s built. She seems so confident, so certain, so at ease in a setting like that.

And I knew that they had zero access to what it felt like for me inside in that moment. That what they were seeing and what I was experiencing were two completely different things. That the comparison (if someone was making it) was based on information that had never been real.

Because the highlight reel is never real. Not in the way we treat it as real when we compare ourselves to it. It is always, even at its best, a partial truth. A surface moment extracted from a much more complicated interior experience that the camera, the post, the pitch, the platform is never going to show.

And the person producing the highlight reel, the person on the screen, in the post, on the stage, is too often the last person who feels like what they appear to be. (Which is unfortunate, and it’s my passion to change that. For good.)

That’s not weakness, by the way. Although it’s often treated as one. It’s a gap that no one wants to really talk about honestly. Because talking about it honestly would require admitting that the prestige moment felt like survival rather than arrival. That the visible success felt nothing like what success was supposed to feel like. That when the external marker landed, it only left you wondering what you had actually been working toward.

The question underneath all of it

Which brings me to the question I’ve been sitting with often ever since that morning in the television studio.

What are we actually chasing?

When we measure ourselves against someone else’s highlight reel, when we use their apparent confidence, their visible results, their external markers of success as the standard against which we assess our own readiness, worth, and right to be seen — what is it we’re actually trying to reach?

Because if the destination is the television show, and the television show feels like fight-flight, then I don’t think the destination was ever the destination. That if the prestigious moment, the visible success, the external confirmation of having made it feels from the inside like survival rather than arrival, then the marker was never the thing.

And comparison was never the point.

I’ve come to believe that most of what we call success; the metrics, the milestones, the visible markers of having built something that matters, is actually a stand-in for something we’re trying to feel on the inside that the outside can never actually deliver. The sense of being enough. Of having arrived. Of being allowed, finally, to take up the space we’ve been quietly asking permission for our entire lives.

But none of those arrive from the outside. They never have and never will. The television show didn’t deliver it. The interview didn’t deliver it. The visible moment that looked, from the outside, like confirmation, felt from the inside like a question I still hadn’t answered.

Am I enough? Do I belong here? Is this really mine?

The external success couldn’t answer those questions. Because they were never external questions.

What success actually looks like from the inside

I’ve been redefining this for myself over the past few years. In the lived, sometimes uncomfortable reality of what it actually means to choose differently.

For me, right now, success is being able to freely be me. To return to myself. Again and again. Even in the moments when returning to myself means disappointing someone else. Even when it means other people don’t agree with me. Even when it means relationships end because I choose to stay true to myself rather than abandon myself in order to belong.

Sometimes that feels very still and very neutral in the body. A quiet knowing that doesn’t need external confirmation because it isn’t asking an external question.

Sometimes it still feels like total chaos in the mind, like the interview, when old patterns activate and the familiar pull toward what’s safe and known and approved of appears. But always underneath the chaos there is this steadiness. A body that knows, even when the mind is loud. And I’ve come to trust that now. I know I return to that steadiness eventually. Inevitably.

That’s success for me right now. The return. The moment (witnessed by no one) when I choose myself anyway. When I interrupt the old pattern and stay, even in the discomfort of being seen in a way that might cost me belonging somewhere else.

Because the thing I was actually looking for all along — in the comparison, the highlight reels, the prestige moments — was belonging. The sense that I was enough to be here, to build this, to take up this space. And that I have permission to do so.

And I’ve learned, at real cost, that the belonging I was looking for out there was always asking me to abandon the belonging I had in here. Inside.

To belong to yourself first.

In the presence of everything that tries to pull you away from it.

What to do with the comparison when it arrives

I’m sure the comparison will keep arriving. The highlight reel will keep appearing in your feed, in your industry, and in the conversation where someone mentions what they’re building and something in you immediately starts measuring.

But the next time it does, I invite you to hold two things simultaneously.

First: have no access to what that highlight reel feels like from the inside. None. The confident exterior, visible result, apparently effortless success. You don’t know what’s running underneath it. You don’t know whether the person producing it felt, in the moment of producing it, anything like what you imagine they felt. You are comparing your interior to a surface.

And second: the thing you’re actually measuring yourself against isn’t their success. It’s your own unanswered question about whether you belong here. Whether you’re enough. Whether what you’re building is real and worthy and worth the visibility it requires.

That question doesn’t get answered by the comparison. You’ll find the answers, perhaps slowly and imperfectly, one return at a time by choosing yourself anyway. By staying present in the moments that feel like fight-flight (and I’m not talking about moments of physical danger). By interrupting the loop because you’ve decided that belonging to yourself matters more than belonging to the version of success the highlight reel is selling.

That’s where the work actually lives.

And you deserve to stay with yourself in moments when something important is being asked of you.

If that work is calling for you, The Rapid Reset for Hesitation Loops is a practical toolkit for the moments when the comparison arrives and pulls you away from yourself.
